Middle School at San Antonio Academy: A Journey of Growth, Brotherhood, and Leadership
San Antonio Academy's Middle School program, designed for boys in grades 6-8, offers a unique environment where academics, character development, and leadership come together. These final three years at SAA provide students with experiences and skills that not only prepare them for high school but shape them into thoughtful, capable young men ready to make an impact.
Building Academic Excellence and Lifelong Friendships
In Middle School, SAA boys embark on an enriched curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Core subjects like history, mathematics, language arts, and science are taught in a sequential structure, ensuring a strong academic foundation. With a variety of electives available in fine arts, foreign languages, and other areas, students can explore their interests while expanding their learning.
Alongside academics, SAA fosters a deep sense of camaraderie and “Bond of Brotherhood” among students. These friendships, formed through shared experiences and teamwork, often last a lifetime and are a vital part of the SAA experience.
Beyond the Classroom: Character, Leadership, and Extracurriculars
San Antonio Academy believes in the importance of well-rounded development. Middle School boys are encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities and sports, reinforcing teamwork and leadership while building meaningful connections. From student government to academic clubs and athletics, SAA’s extracurricular offerings help boys strengthen their character, build confidence, and contribute to their school community.
Highlights of the Middle School experience include memorable events such as the 8th-grade Shakespeare play, the annual Military Ball, and the exhilarating Cardboard Boat Regatta. These events not only make for unforgettable memories but also provide students with unique learning opportunities.
Developing Effective Study Habits and Personal Responsibility
Homework is a vital part of the Middle School routine, with students expected to complete about 90 minutes of assignments each weeknight. This workload reinforces classroom learning, encourages effective study habits, and instills a sense of responsibility. SAA works closely with parents to create consistent routines that help boys manage their time well and develop independence in their studies.
To support their holistic growth, SAA encourages students to balance academic commitments with physical activity and downtime. Boys are encouraged to take part in sports, and teachers coordinate with athletic schedules to ensure assignments and expectations are manageable.
Support Systems for Academic Success
SAA recognizes that some students may face academic challenges, especially within a rigorous curriculum. For boys who need extra help, SAA offers no-cost tutoring from 3:30 to 4:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. For longer-term assistance, parents may arrange for private tutoring in consultation with the school. With guidance from the Office of Student Services, students can even receive additional support from tutors or therapists on campus if needed.
Students with learning disabilities may also qualify for academic accommodations. SAA provides resources and supports that address specific needs while ensuring that every student can achieve their personal best.
After-School Activities: Opportunities for Growth and Fun
Once the school day ends, Middle School boys can choose from a variety of after-school activities. Homework Club offers a quiet space for students to focus, while school-sponsored sports provide opportunities to compete and excel. From football and baseball to track, tennis, and golf, SAA’s athletics program encourages boys to stay active, build discipline, and develop lifelong skills.
