Building Leadership Through Outdoor Education at San Antonio Academy
At San Antonio Academy, education extends far beyond the classroom. The Outdoor Leadership Program, a required elective from kindergarten through 8th grade, is an integral part of the Academy Experience, fostering academic achievement, leadership, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
A Foundation in Outdoor Exploration
For Primary School students (kindergarten through 2nd grade), the program sparks an early connection with nature through hands-on learning. Boys explore their natural environments while gaining fundamental knowledge in animal identification, ecosystems, and conservation. Lessons cover essential outdoor skills, including:
Hiking and campfire safety
Wildlife and plant identification
Agriculture and outdoor survival
By the time they enter Elementary School, students already understand the importance of conservation and responsible outdoor stewardship.
Developing Skills and Leadership in Elementary & Middle School
As students progress into Elementary and Middle School, the program evolves into more challenging and rewarding outdoor experiences. The curriculum emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and self-reliance, with students gaining real-world skills through activities such as:
Hunting, fishing, and camping
Boater and hunter education certification
Shooting sports (archery, rifle, shotguns, laser handguns)
Overnight hiking and camping trips
Kayaking, canoeing, and outdoor cooking
Basic outdoor first aid and wildlife conservation
These experiences not only equip students with essential outdoor skills but also teach them responsibility, problem-solving, and perseverance—qualities that will serve them throughout life.
A Commitment to Community and Inclusivity
One of the most unique aspects of the Outdoor Leadership Program is its partnership with City Kids Adventures (CKA), a nonprofit led by Leon McNeil, one of SAA’s Outdoor Leadership teachers. Through this collaboration, students have the opportunity to interact with youth from diverse backgrounds, building friendships and understanding through shared outdoor experiences.
Why Outdoor Leadership Matters
The Outdoor Leadership Program at San Antonio Academy goes beyond outdoor education—it’s about shaping confident, capable, and compassionate young men. Whether they’re navigating a hiking trail, learning firearm safety, or participating in conservation efforts, students develop skills that prepare them for leadership roles both in school and beyond.
For families seeking an academically rigorous, character-driven education with a focus on leadership and outdoor adventure, San Antonio Academy offers an unparalleled experience.
