Elementary School at SAA: Fostering Leadership and Character Development
Life in the Elementary School (3rd–5th Grade) at SAA
At SAA, our
Elementary School program for boys in grades 3 through 5 builds on the
foundation set in the Primary School, offering an enriching and well-rounded
education. With a strong focus on developing the whole child, our approach
considers boys’ developmental needs and incorporates teaching strategies proven
to support their learning.
A Holistic Approach to Education
In the
Elementary School, our curriculum includes core subjects such as language arts,
mathematics, science, social studies, and Spanish, alongside opportunities to
explore fine arts, visual arts, and performing arts. Our elective offerings
include Outdoor Leadership, Makerspace, journalism, speech, and robotics,
providing boys with the chance to explore their passions while developing
critical skills for the future. Physical education is a key part of the
curriculum, fostering self-confidence, teamwork, and athletic ability.
Each
school day begins with Chapel, where students gather for life lessons grounded
in our school’s motto: “Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.®” This time
sets the tone for our commitment to character development, ensuring that each
boy grows not only academically, but also socially and emotionally.
Curriculum Designed for Boys' Learning Needs
At SAA, we
recognize that each boy learns in his own way, and our curriculum is
continuously reviewed to meet the needs of individual students. We focus on the
6 C’s of 21st Century Learning: Critical thinking, Clear communication,
Collaborative work, Cultural awareness, Creativity development, and
Connectivity. These elements help boys become well-rounded learners, ready to
excel in all areas of life.
Daily Routine and Homework
Starting in
3rd grade, students are given homework Monday through Thursday. The purpose of
this homework is to reinforce classroom learning, build study skills, and
foster independence. While homework time increases gradually from 20–30 minutes
in primary grades to 60–80 minutes in elementary grades, we also offer Homework
Club after school for students who need a quiet space to complete assignments.
This program provides an opportunity for boys to work independently while
receiving support from teachers if needed.
A
consistent homework routine is essential for success. Parents play an important
role in helping students establish good habits and time management skills. With
our balance of structured work and unstructured play, boys are encouraged to
enjoy their personal time and participate in sports or other extracurricular
activities.
Support for Academic Difficulty
We
understand that every student faces challenges at times, and we are committed
to providing support. Any student in grades 3 through 8 can attend no-cost
tutoring after school, Monday through Thursday, for help in their subject area.
For more significant academic challenges, longer-term private tutoring options
are available. SAA’s staff collaborates with tutors and specialists to ensure a
coordinated approach for each student’s success.
Students
with identified learning disabilities may be eligible for academic
accommodations, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive. Our dedicated
staff works closely with students and families to support academic growth and
personal development.
Afterschool Opportunities and WELL (Wildcat Extended Learning and Leadership)
At SAA,
learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings. Our WELL program offers afterschool
classes like fencing, cooking, robotics, and more, allowing students to explore
new interests. Additionally, competitive sports provide students with the chance
to develop athletic skills and school spirit. Practices for these teams are
conveniently held on campus, making it easy for students to balance academics
and extracurricular activities.
